The war on nature is suicidal

If we are to register any significant progress in addressing our quality of life we must once and for all end the war on nature. This has been emphasised by Inger Anderson, the Executive Director of UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) when she was addressing the Conference of the Parties of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, currently in session at Montreal.

This has been also emphasised by a multitude of speakers within other fora, notably those related to climate, most recently in Sharm El Sheikh during the latest Climate Summit.

The Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity are just two of the many efforts and initiatives of the international community in order to end the continuous human war on nature.

Small steps forward have been made but they are nowhere near being enough in order to have any significant impact in halting the damage done to date as well as reversing its consequences.

It has been an uphill struggle for more than fifty years. It was in Stockholm fifty years ago, in June 1972, that the international community agreed for the first time ever, to recognise the environment as an important issue to be delt with by the global political agenda.

The UN Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm in 1972 laid the foundations for international environmental governance. The Stockholm Conference is in fact credited with introducing the environment in the contemporary political lexicon.

Opening the United Nations Montreal Biodiversity Conference, this week, Antonio Guterres-UN Secretary General, said that humans are treating nature “as a toilet”. Nature, said Guterres, is humanity’s best friend: without nature, we have nothing, without nature we are nothing!

We threaten nature in many ways: urbanisation, deforestation, agricultural intensification, all forms of pollution, climate change as well as the spread of invasive species. Possibly these are the primary vehicles used in the intensive war waged by humanity against nature.

It is about time that we seek ways to make peace. With nature, however, there is no room for negotiation! We must seek to make peace before nature strikes back with full force. It is already retaliating, and this will definitely get much worse.

There is no possibility to negotiate with nature, her demands are clear and simple: unconditional surrender. We need to change our ways and habits. Nature can be a reliable friend but if transformed into an enemy, it is ruthless, as climate change shows continuously and unequivocally.

Nature is what sustains everything on earth, yet it is declining on a global level. The rate of extinction of species is increasing exponentially.

Expanding protected areas is not enough to arrest nature’s decline. We need to change our behaviour through seriously addressing the various environmental threats. We must limit the spread of invasive species, and halt deforestation. We need to protect agricultural land. It is imperative that we drive some sense into land use planning. We also need to eliminate environmentally harmful subsidies. We need to protect what’s left of the natural resources which we have been provided with!

It is only when our actions match our nice words that we can start achieving the required results. Until then, we inch closer to a collective suicide.

CHOGM 2015 : b’rispett lejn id-drittijiet tal-bniedem

Joseph Muscat with Mahinda Rajapakse .Sri Lanka Nov 2013 CHOGM 2013 Sri Lanka

Waqt il-laqgħa tal-Kapijiet tal-Commonwealth li saret il-ġimgħa l-oħra ġo Colombo fis-Sri Lanka sar magħruf li l-Mauritius irtira l-istedina tiegħu biex il-laqgħa li jmiss tal-Kapijiet tal-Gvern tal-pajjiżi membri tal-Commonwealth issir fil-Mauritius.

Malta fiċ-ċirkustanzi offriet li l-laqgħa issir ġo pajjiżna. L-istedina ġiet milqugħa.

Il-mistoqsija hi: għalfejn ġiet iritirat l-istedina tal-Mauritius biex dan il-pajjiż jorganizza ic-CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting) fl-2015?

Ir-risposta issiba fil-media internazzjonali.

Il-Kapijiet tal-Gvern tal-Mauritius, il-Kanada u l-Indja ma marrux għas-Summit tac-CHOGM fis-Sri Lanka l-ġimgħa l-oħra minħabba l-qagħda tad-drittijiet tal-bniedem fil-pajjiż. Għalhekk ukoll il-Mauritius irtira l-istedina tiegħu  biex il-laqggħa taċ-CHOGM fl-2015 issir fil-Mauritius.

Il-Kummissarju Għoli tal-Ġnus Magħquda dwar id-Drittijiet tal-Bniedem Navi Pillay ilha minn Settembru tinsisti mal-Gvern ta’ Sri Lanka biex issir investigazzjoni serja dwar l-abbużi li seħħew fi Sri Lanka.

Il-Prim Ministru Ingliż David Cameron li l-ġimgħa l-oħra attenda għas-summit fi Sri Lanka ħa posizzjoni iebsa fuq ir-record tad-drittijiet tal-bniedem tal-Gvern tas-Sri Lanka.

Il-lista hi twila u tinkludi tortura, nies li nqatlu jew li sparixxew,  intimidazzjoni ta’ ġurnalisti,  stupru …..

F’diskors li għamel f’Colombo l-ġimgħa l-oħra David Cameron wissa’ li jekk is-Sri Lanka mhux ser tiċċaqlaq, ir-Renju Unit ikun kostrett li jitlob lill-Ġnus Magħquda biex tibda investigazzjoni.

F’dan il-kuntest minnflok ma appoġġat il-posizzjoni tal-Mauritius Malta offriet li tieħu postha u dan mingħajr l-ebda konsiderazzjoni għat-tkasbir tad-drittijiet tal-bniedem fis-Sri Lanka.

Ma nafx meta ser jasal iż-żmien li Malta jkollha politika barranija mibnija fuq il-valuri, fosthom tar-rispett lejn id-dinjita’ tal-bniedem.

Qed nippretendi wisq?

Il-Posta ……………. fil-Kanada

Il-Posta fil-Canada ippubblikat l-ewwel rapport tagħha dwar ir-responsabbilta soċjali. Dan ir-rapport huwa intitolat Acting Responsibly. Social Responsibility Report 2007.

Huwa rapport importanti għax fil-qasam tas-settur pubbliku ftit hemm rapporti ta’ din ix-xorta.

Bħal kull CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) report ieħor dan ir-rapport ifittex jispjega kif l-operat tal-Posta fil-Canada qed jaġixxi biex ikollu impatti soċjali u ambjentali pożittivi. Ir-rapport ifittex li janalizza l-ħidma tal-posta Kanadiża fid-dawl tal-prinċipji tas-sostenibilita’: ċjoe li l-ħidma tal-posta m’għandiex tkun biss waħda vijabbli ekonomikament iżda għandha tfittex ukoll il-ġid soċjali tal-komunita’ li fiha hi preżenti, kif ukoll li għandha tassigura li l-impatti ambjentali tagħha jkunu l-minimu possibli. Ir-rapport jittratta ukoll materji ta’ etika.

Bħal kull CSR report ieħor dan ir-rapport tal-Posta Kanadiża jikkonsidra kemm l-operat intern tal-posta innifisha, il-mod kif taħdem u kif tittratta l-impjegati tagħha (saħħa u sigurta’ fuq il-post tax-xogħol, relazzjonijiet industrijali), il-policy interna ta’ whistleblowing   bħala deterrent għal abbużi li jistgħu jinqalgħu minn żmien għal żmien, il-politika dwar id-diversita’ fuq il-post tax-xogħol, ir-rispett lejn id-drittijiet umani kif ukoll dak li jissejjaħ disability management, jiġifieri l-mod kif fuq il-post tax-xogħol il-posta Kanadiża tfittex li tgħin lil min iweġġa’ jew ikollu disabilita u per konsegwenza ma jkunx jista’ jagħmel ix-xogħol kollu normali tiegħu.

Filwaqt li jitkellem dwar id-donazzjonijiet u sponsorships  ir-rapport jiffoka fuq l-għajnuna li l-Posta Kanadiża tagħti lill-għaqdiet li jaħdmu fuq l-issue tas-saħħa mentali.

Kif mistenni parti importanti mir-rapport jiffoka fuq l-impatti ambjentali tal-posta, fuq ir-riċiklaġġ tal-iskart, fuq l-impatti klimatiċi tal-ħidma tal-posta u fuq kif il-bini minn fejn topera l-posta qed ikun iddisinjat ħalli jnaqqas l-impatt negattiv fuq l-ambjent (green design).

It-target tal-posta kanadiża huwa li fuq perjodu ta’ 10 snin inaqqas l-emissjonijiet ta’ greenhouse gases b’14% fuq dawk tal-2002. Il-Canada għandha waħda mill-iżgħar densitajiet ta’ popolazzjoni fid-dinja (ftit iktar minn 3 persuni għal kull kilometru kwadru) u allura huwa ftit diffiċli li tilħaq targets għoljin għal tnaqqis ta’ konsum ta’ fuel. F’dan il-kuntest allura tipprova tinkoraġixxi lill-impjegati tagħha biex ifittxu metodi alternattivi dwar kif imorru x-xogħol, bil-bicycle jew bil-mixi fost oħrajn.

Dan it-tip ta’ rapport huwa ta’ għajnuna kbira għall-komunita li fih isir. Għax barra li matul is-sena tkun saret ħidma siewja, wara jgħin biex din il-ħidma titqiegħed taħt il-lenti bl-iskop li għas-sena ta’ wara tkun aħjar.

U aħna f’Malta? Bħas-soltu għadna lura. Dwar is-CSR inpaċpċu ħafna, iżda nieqfu hemm.
