The Coalition for the Abolition of Spring Hunting has today announced that it has just breached the 30,000 signature barrier in the signature collection exercise currently under way to call a referendum to end once and for all spring hunting.
The objective of the Coalition is to reach and exceed the minimum number of signatures required by law in order to be able to inititiate the process for the spring hunting referendum.
The minimum number of signatures required is 10% of the total number of voters as listed in the October 2013 General Election Register.
In the October 2013 General Election Register the total number of voters stands at 334,177.
10% of that number amounts to 33,418 signatures.
All of the signatures must be valid ones. In order to ascertain the validity of the number of signatures the Coalition has commenced an internal verification exercise through which the details listed in the petition forms are now being checked against the information published in the October 2013 General Election Register.
When all the signatures collected have been checked and the Coalition will have ascertained that it has in hand not less than 33,418 valid signatures then the petition will be submitted to the Electoral Commission.
It is expected that this whole process will be concluded over the Christmas period.
In the meantime the signature collection will continue until such time that the Coalition has verified that it has the 33,418 valid signatures in hand.
