Naħseb li r-raġunijiet li ġiebet l-Opposizzjoni biex tiġġustifika l-mozzjoni tagħha kontra RCC kienu ftit inġebbda, u jekk xejn iktar kienu jiġġustifikaw mozzjoni ta’ sfiduċja f’Gonzi innifsu. Għax ngħiduha kif inhi: RCC ma ħa l-ebda deċiżjoni li jinqabeż il-Parlament. Jekk kien hemm din it-tip ta’ deċiżjoni, din ittieħdet mill-Gvern u r-responsabbilta’ għal dan hi ta’ Lawrence Gonzi biss u ta’ ħadd iktar.
Iktar kienu jagħmlu sens ir-raġunijiet li ġieb Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, li minkejja dak li qal, kien hemm element qawwi ta’ tpattija personali fl-argumentazzjoni tiegħu. Jeffrey ġieb argumenti li kienu jikkuntrastaw ma dak li qalet l-Opposizzjoni u fi kwalunkwe pajjiż demokratiku kienu jwasslu għal riżenja ferm kmieni ta’ RCC, kif wara kollox jidher li hu stess kien lest li jagħmel hekk kif tressqet il-mozzjoni tal-Partit Laburista.
Kien hemm min argumenta li m’huwiex korrett li iċ-ċivil (jew aħjar uffiċjali pubbliċi – għax RCC kien uffiċjal pubbliku) jkunu mitluba jagħtu kont ta’ egħmilhom lill-Parlament. It-tweġiba tiegħi hi waħda: min jokkupa ħatra politika għandu jagħti rendikont politiku.
RCC kien uffiċjal pubbliku b’differenza: il-ħatra tiegħu kienet waħda determinata biss minn kriterji politiċi. Aġixxa bħala politiku billi ipparteċipa fil-laqgħat tal-Kabinett. Kien ukoll attiv politikament fl-Eżekuttiv tal-PN. Kien jeżerċita poter politiku – kważi bla limitu. Allura huwa xieraq li kien meħtieġ li jagħti kont politiku.
This analysis is sharp and to the point. The basis of the Opposition’s motion is not valid in principle and not even in fact, as the timeline given by Dr. Gonzi shows quite clearly. On the other hand, the JPO arguments did have a strong element of personal vengence; but worse than that they had a strong element of hypocrisy. JPO had no objection to being “led” by RCC at the time of his clash with Alfred Sant; this he said himself. And that “leading” was clearly way beyond the strict duties of a “public official” as well as being of dubious legality. But when RCC, again as alleged by JPO, advised against (he could hardly have “forced” Dr. Gonzi) any “ministry” for JPO, the latter suddenly woke up to the fact that RCC was exceeding his brief sort of. All those canvassing hints of ‘JPO for Tourism’ came to nothing. The Mistra disco evaporated, leaving just a couple of petty court cases in its wake. No wonder the “dagger” was kept so carefully hidden and then stuck in with such gusto at the “end”. Not even being disowned by Daphne Caruna Galizia could have diminished the satisfaction.
I believe: – it was wrong to have a ”permanent” commissioner for Malta in Brussels;
– it was wrong to have a politically selected person who was supposed to represent the entire population irrespective of political allegiance;
– for these reasons RCC should have never been arbitrarily selected by Dr. E. Fenech Adami and Dr. Gonzi should have removed him years ago.
– Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando did the right thing – he showed he puts ethics and the interest of the country before all else.
What that twit Daphne says about JFO is just spite – the sort of ”hamallagni” for which she has become so famous. Pity that the P.N. uses Daphne’s services to prop up the party – she’s doing more harm than good! But then that can also be said, in my opinion, for the Prime Minister himself. His many serious mistakes have made of him a serious liability for the party.
