Students in Solar Car Challenge

Four university students are aiming to drive a solar-powered car the length of Britain. They left Lands’ End, Cornwall, on Sunday and hope to reach John O’Groats, Caithness, on Saturday.

The Cambridge University students said they hope their 934-mile journey will fuel the debate about sustainable technology.

Their specially-made car, Affinity, is capable of a top speed of 60mph.

“Designing and building the car has been an exhilarating experience for all involved,” team-leader Martin McBrien said.

“Sustainable transportation is no longer an issue for the future, but for today. With oil at 135 dollars a barrel, proving that travelling on free energy from the sun is possible brings real hope.”
