This very serious episode proves a number of facts:
1. The Prime Minister acted contrary to the interests of the nation when his administration signed the collective agreement with doctors / consultants just before the 2008 election. The Maltese are still being hit hard by that scandalous agreement.
2. Dr. Lawrence Gonzi once again put political considerations before national interests.
3. The previous Minister for Health should have spoken out and objected to that agreement at the time. Why was that not done?
4. Dr. Franco Debono is so right when he declares that the Prime Minister may not be his own master. Did somebody else advise Dr. Gonzi to sign that agreement? Was it Dr. E. Fenech Adami, Richard Cachia Caruana...? It is anybody's guess who it was but personally I believe that the P.M. may have received the final push to do what he did. Acting against the interest of all the patients who would be using Mater Dei is not quite the gentlemanly and charitable way of doing things. He must have known that the country could not afford the overly generous terms of that agreement.
4. Maltese doctors and consultants need to pull their weight if the situation at the hospital is to improve. They need to carry on working in the afternoons and in the early evening if that is necessary. Who will convince them to do that now? Hopefully the Hon. P.M. will do that seeing that it was himself who was so generous with them four years ago.

Does it really matter if Government (the PM presumably) denies Dr. Deguara's statement? Dr. Cassar - who comes from the same stable as Dr. Gonzi -- has just said that the Agreement is a millstone round the Health Department's neck. A PN government signed the agreement: Dr. Cassar has nowhere to go and no political adversary to blame. Perhaps he should consider resigning, seeing he can hardly swim with a millstone round his neck. Dr. Deguara should certainly have done so.

Very fair comment. But I will not be surprised if tomorrow Government comes back denying Dr Deguara's statement. The usual ping-pong. As in the 80's nothing surprises us anymore.
